Deborah Tobiason
- Co-Chair, Biology Department; Professor of Biology
Professor Deborah Tobiason came to Carthage from Northwestern University, where she was a research assistant professor at Feinberg School of Medicine. She joined the SEA-PHAGES group sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 2011 and directs the Phage Hunters courses at Carthage. She has received a number of grants to do research with undergraduate students involving synthetic biology, space biology, and bacteriophage. She and her students have presented at various research conferences including the American Society of Microbiology, the HHMI Phage Symposium, the National Science Foundation REU conference, and the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium conference. The bacteriophage research has also resulted in a number of publications for multiple students.
Prof. Tobiason’s focus is to provide students with excellent undergraduate research experiences and to share her passion for the microbial world.
Prof. Tobiason earned a B.S. in biology from Loyola College of Maryland in 1992, and a Ph.D. in microbiology and molecular genetics from Emory University in 1998. She joined the Carthage faculty in 2007.
